Achill Island Golf Club win the County Cup
Saturday, 27 April, 2013 was a 'red letter day' in the history of Achill Island Golf Club. Having won the prestigious 'County Cup' in Ballina last year, for the first time in the 62 year history of the club, it fell to Achill to host this year's competition. This was the first time that Achill Island Golf Club had hosted an interclub competition of this importance and magnitude. On this day ten golf clubs from all over the county travelled to Achill to compete for the 'County Cup', they were represented by eight players from each club with the best six cards to score for each club.
In ideal conditions for links golf, Achill looked its best with blue skies and a moderate northwesterly breeze, showing off our mountains and the majestic Cathederal Minaun Cliffs as a fantastic backdrop for our visiting golfers, many of whom were playing our course for the first time. The Achill team was led by its non playing Captain, Noel English and consisted of Leo Smith, Michael Scanlon, Sean McGinty, Gerry Hassett, Dominick Martin Vesey, Cian McNamara, Mark Corrigan and Gerry Needham. Our team returned an excellent aggregate score of 224 points, comfortably beating Westport Golf Club into second place with 212 points, with Claremorris Golf Club a close third on 210 points.
The visiting teams were loud in their praise of Achill for the organisation of the event and the condition of the course, particularly the excellent greens with many vowing to return to play our course again in the near future. At the presentation of the County Cup, and presenting local pottery plates for the winning team members in the Clubhouse, the Captain, Gerry Weir spoke of his pride in the team that represented Achill Island Golf Club on their great achievement and indeed of the Club's preparation and hard work in staging and delivering on this major event in Achill for the first time in our history. He thanked the visiting teams for their participation and their kind comments on our course. He also thanked the many club members for their work on the day in ensuring the smooth running of the competition.

Junior Programme 2013
The Junior Golf Programme 2013 under the direction of The Junior Convenor Jim Quigley is now well underway. This is a great opportunity for the parents and guardians of young boys and girls in the parish of Achill to introduce their children to a game and passtime that can endure with them throughout their lives. The costs are kept minimal and equipment is available free of charge so there is no need to invest in expensive golf equipment for participants in the Junior Golf Programme. No matter what part of the world their lives bring them to there will be a golf club close to them and it can be a great way to meet people and settle into a community. So pick up the phone and get all the information you need from our Junior Convenor, Jim Quigley at 086 8332832 or Christy Gallagher at 087 7721737.
The schedule for these new juniors will be as follows:Friday 3rd May, 6:00 to 8:00 PM
Friday 10th May 6:00 to 8:00 Pm. All juniors are also welcome to attend these above sessions.
The schedule for the junior’s professional tuition was agreed following a call to the golf professional Aidan Moran. The schedule is as follows: Day 1, Friday 31st May, 6 to 8pm; Day 2, Saturday 8th June, 10:00am to 12:00pm; Day 3, Saturday 15th June, 10:00am to 12:00pm; Day 4, Saturday 22nd June, 10:00am to 12:00pm; Day 5, Friday 5th July 6:00pm to 8:00pm; Day 6, Friday 19th July 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
The Club are hoping, in conjunction with Junior Golf Ireland, to arrange an Open Day at the end of June or the beginning of July for Juniors in the Achill area.
The above arrangements are subject to change, so check with Jim at 0868332832 or Christy at 0877721737 for updates.
The Club have decided that the 2012 paid up Juvenile membership will cover the same category of membership for 2013.
Defibrillator for the Golf Club
Members interested in being included in De-Fib training please put your name on the sheet which is posted in the Clubhouse.
In a very positive initiative and in keeping with many other sporting clubs, Achill Island Golf Club have decided to invest in the purchase of a Defibrillator machine which will be located in the Clubhouse in Keel. A number of club members will be fully trained in the use of the machine which will be a vitally important piece of lifesaving equipment to have on hand should the need for its use ever arise. Your support for this important project will be greatly appreciated. It could save your life!
